Every one has done it, gone out and got an air mattress from a big box store that has that odd felt top and is made out of rubber weights a ton and develops a hole within a year or so. I bought this as a replacement for the Foxelli pad I was using as the regular mattress for my minimalist lightweight bed. The only things I miss about the Foxelli pad are the cool outer space design and the dimpled pillow design. The Redcamp pad is thicker, slightly wider, and a little longer, and really shines in terms of comfort, whether self-inflated or fully inflated for firmness. The dimpled design of the Foxelli pillow was a bit more comfy than the simple inflated cylinder of the Redcamp pad. Both pack down to a very manageable size and shape. I like it, it’s comfortable, but self inflate? Not much. Took a lot of manual breathing to fill it and it wasn’t easy because the air blowed in seemed to want to come back out. That said, I won’t need this often so I can deal with it. If you camp regularly you might want to go to REI and spend the big bucks. The expensive ones you just press on repeatedly like doing CPR and they fill right up.
