On 8th April 1947, in Hilo, Hawaii, U. S., Ralph H. Kiyosaki and Marjorie O. Kiyosaki brought their first child into this world, a son Robert Toru Kiyosaki. His father was an academic and educator, and his mother was a registered nurse. Kiyosaki has three siblings: sisters Emi and Beth, and a brother John.

In 1965, Kiyosaki graduated from Hilo High School. Soon after, he enrolled at the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York. In 1969, he graduated as a deck officer with a Bachelor of Science degree, and also did commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1973, he enrolled in a two-year MBA program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, while he still was in the military. A year after, he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps.

After his graduation, Kiyosaki worked on merchant ships, which allowed him to travel the world. In 1972, during the Vietnam War, Kiyosaki served as a helicopter gunship pilot. The service earned him the Air Medal. From 1974 to 1978, he worked as a salesman for Xerox Corporation, selling copy machines. In 1977, he started his own brand named Rippers, which was appreciated for introducing nylon and velcro surfer wallets. Numerous magazines praised those products, including Runner’s World, Gentleman’s Quarterly, Success Magazine, Newsweek, and Playboy. Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt.

In 1985, Kiyosaki cofounded a business education company named the Excellerated Learning Institute, but nine years later, he sold it. His first book, If You Want To Be Rich And Happy, Don’t Go To School, was published in 1992. In the book, he encouraged parents to send their children into the real estate business, instead of college. So far he wrote about 26 books. Some of them achieved the nominating place in the best-selling lists of The Wall Street Journal, USA and The New York Times, concurrently. Some were even translated into 40 languages and sold in more than 80 countries. Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter co-wrote the first Rich Dan, Poor Dad, and the book was pretty successful.

In 1997, Kiyosaki launched Cashflow Technologies, Inc. which owns the licenses for the Rich Dad and Cashflow brands.
